Why Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing more awareness to our everyday activities, from eating, drinking and breathing to brushing our teeth and washing our hands. Put simply, it is about becoming present in an ever-deepening way, paying attention to the huge number of things present in each passing moment. These things include thoughts, emotions, sensations and our environment. Central to mindfulness is breaking the unconscious identification with/belief in our thoughts, which usually happens when we don't pay enough conscious attention to the 'now'. Mindfulness allows us to step back and observe the constant parade of our thoughts and see them for what they are; "just thoughts". It is through this observation that we begin to see that thoughts are not necessarily true.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness also allows us to explore the richness of our emotional lives and understand their ebb and flow. By increasing our awareness of the present moment, we feel a multitude of emotions that are with us always – often these are longstanding issues.

Through the practice, we learn not to resist our feelings, but to accept them, feel them entirely, and this allows the energy to pass and fade. Pain is a part of life, but it is only by acknowledging this pain and allowing it to 'be' that our difficult emotions are able to move and dissolve.

Participation in a mindfulness class means that from the first session you attend, you will immediately have skills to incorporate mindfulness into your daily activities, which will gift you with a growing amount of the same benefits as a formal meditation sitting practice.
Mindfulness can be practised “anywhere, anyhow, anytime”.
Another lovely consequence of cultivating a mindfulness practice is the ripple effect. The positive energy and greater sense of harmonythat results from learning to live in a more conscious way naturally ripples out from the individual into the wider world.
Western medicine and psychology now embraces the benefits of mindfulness and it is being successfully integrated into many mainstream programs as a means to manage chronic pain and to treat many psychological conditions ranging from anxiety, depression and addictions to eating disorders.
